Attention

  • Attention

  • Lack of focus or impulsivity can make it very difficult for children and adolescents to perform well in school or get along

with their peers. It is common for kids struggling with attention to have difficulty listening to instructions or

following directions. These kiddos sometimes get labeled as being defiant, even when they are trying their best to please

those around them. Failing grades and poor social relationships with others can make them feel isolated, frustrated and

filled with self doubt. Counseling can help provide kids with the coping strategies they need to re-build their

self-confidence and channel their energy into developing their personal strengths.

  • Common Attention Disorders

  • Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Predominantly Inattentive Presentation

  • Inattention is characterized by behaviors that negatively impact a child's social, academic or occupational activities such as

failing to give close attention to details, difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play activities, inability to listen when

spoken to directly, not follow through on instructions and failing to finish schoolwork, chores, or other duties.

Children and adolescents may also have difficulty organizing tasks and activities, lose things necessary for tasks or

activities, become easily distracted or display forgetfulness in daily activities.

  • Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Predominantly Hyperactive/Impulsive Presentation

  • Impulsivity is characterized by behaviors such as fidgeting with hands or feet or squirming in seat, leaving seat in situations

when remaining seated, running about or climbing in situations where it is inappropriate, being unable to play or engage in

leisure activities quietly and other disruptive behaviors such as talking excessively and being driven to move.

  • Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Combined Presentation

  • Children who display signs of inattention and hyperactivity are said to have a combined type of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.
