Depression

  • Depression

  • Withdrawal from others, loss of appetite, and self-harm may all be signs that your child is struggling with depression.

It is heart breaking to watch your child struggle with intense emotions of sadness and despair. Or perhaps, your child has

become very irritable and irrational. Depression can present very uniquely in children and adolescents and can escalate to

self harming behaviors if not addressed. Counseling can help your child gain an understanding of why they feel the way

they feel. They will also learn how to engage in behaviors aimed at decreasing depression and increasing their connection

    and engagement within their world.

  • Common Depression Disorders

  • Major Depression

  • Major depression can significantly interfere with your child's ability to enjoy his or her life. Your child may start eating more

or eating less, sleeping more or sleeping less, lose interest in their favorite recreational activities or even begin doing things

to harm themselves such as cutting or using drugs and alcohol.

  • Persistent Depressive Disorder

  • Persistent Depression occurs when your child or adolescent has experienced depression for a prolonged amount of time,

usually two or more years. Prolonged depression can increase your child's likelihood of engaging in self harm and experiencing

an inability to meet emotional developmental milestones on time.

  • Situational Depression

  • Situational depression is not a disorder and is extremely common. This occurs when a child is overwhelmed by their current

situation such as a move away from their friends and family, starting a new school, experiencing a natural disaster or dealing with any

situation that they feel is negative which interferes with their ability to function within their normal routine.
