Trauma

  • Trauma

  • Children and teens can have a multitude of ways that they exhibit signs of trauma and distress. Abuse, neglect, natural

disasters, death and other difficult life events can have dramatic effects on your child's emotional development.

Counseling services can help kids understand difficult thoughts and feelings and give them a safe space to talk about

things that they may feel like they have had to hide from others.

  • Common Trauma Disorders

  • Posttraumatic Stress Disorder

  • Children who have experienced a scary event can suffer from nightmares, obsessive thoughts and anxiety. They may be

triggered by people, objects, sounds, smells or even colors. These children experience triggers that remind them of the

scary event and may be unable to cope with their daily activities once triggered.

  • Acute Stress Disorder

  • Children and teens experiencing Acute Stress Disorder can display many symptoms that resemble PTSD. However, symptoms of Acute Stress Disorder

usually persist for a shorter period of time, usually from 3 days to 1 month. Kids with Acute Stress Disorder should be monitored closely as Acute Stress

Disorder could be an indicator that a child is at risk for developing PTSD.

  • Unspecified Trauma- and Stressor-Related Disorder

  • Sometimes the reasons for a child's symptoms of trauma are unknown. Some kids block past memories and can not

remember the sources of their fear or anxiety. Coping strategies can be put into place to help children and teens learn

stress management and grounding techniques so that they can function in their every day lives.
