About Guatemala

Guatemala is a magnificent country, situated one country south of Mexico, southwest of Belize, and northwest of El Salvador and Honduras, you can visit the Pacific Ocean (west coast), and the Caribbean Sea (east coast).
One of the most exquisite lakes in the world Lake Atitlan (Lago de Atlitlán) can be found halfway between the west coast and Guatemala City. Monterrico Beach, on the west coast, has striking black sand beaches, markets are filled with beautiful colors. The ancient Mayan city of Tikal, located in the rainforests of northern Guatemala, is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Central America.

The Problem

Despite the beautiful landscape and culture, Guatemala struggles with poverty as it is one of the poorest countries in Latin America. One out of four Guatemalans is unable to read or write. Nearly 25% of the country’s adult population is illiterate, putting Guatemala in the bottom 10% of world literacy rates.  When you consider the indigenous Mayan people, that statistic jumps to more than 60%. According to USAID, average schooling in Guatemala is a short four years and only three in 10 children graduate from sixth grade. You can learn more information on the Global Education Fund website.
