THERAPY FOR ALL THE FAMILY IN DURHAM NC

“No family is perfect. We argue we fight. We even stop talking to each other at times. But in the end, family is family. The love will always be there.” -Unknown.

Families are a unique ecosystem; issues affecting one family member can reverberate and affect the whole unit. When a family is happy and healthy, all seems right in the world. But, if you or someone in your family is facing difficulties such as mental illness, substance abuse, or behavioral problems, it can affect the entire family and bring it to its knees. Family therapy can be helpful for any family situation that causes stress, grief, anger, or conflict. It can help families work through their problems, improve communication, and resolve disputes.

Many situations lead families to start family counseling. Some of the more common reasons we see are listed below:

How can family therapy help?

Through family counseling, family members come together and begin a journey to reconnect as a family unit. Family therapy can help open up a line of dialogue and communication, enabling family members to understand one another’s perspectives and making it easier to resolve disputes. Family members can learn how to share their thoughts and needs better and resolve conflicts in a way that is less likely to damage relationships. In some cases, we see additional benefits of this type of counseling that lead to healing emotional wounds in a shorter timeframe.

How is family therapy accomplished?

One of our licensed marriage and family therapists in Durham will meet with you and get to know your family. Together you’ll talk about the problem that brings you in and discuss common conflicts in a safe, non-judgmental environment. As different family members may have differing points of view on the same situation, sometimes your therapist may want to meet with a smaller group or with only one family member. These therapy sessions with one or more family members can provide your counselor with valuable information on how to improve the functioning of the family as a whole and the best strategy for moving towards family reconnection.

If you or a family member are seeking healthier, closer family relationships, you may benefit from family therapy. Contact Potter Counseling and Consulting today to make an appointment with one of our highly trained, licensed marriage and family therapists.
