About Us

Our mission is to deliver high quality mental health services to everyone while demonstrating a high level of respect and a deep level of commitment to our clients. We specialize in caring for the whole client, not just their symptoms. Each person we work with is unique, and possesses their own qualities and strengths which are drawn upon during our work together. All of our services are tailored to meet each individual's needs, because while symptoms may be the same, people are not. Our therapists, counselors, and coaches bring a wide variety of experience to our practice and therefore are able to address issues in many different areas.

Each therapist has been selected through a rigorous process and works as part of a team. This allows us to be confident in the quality of the therapy that our clients receive and ensure that it meets the highest standards.

Melissa Higgins, MSW, LCSW

Clinical Supervisor

Pronouns: she/her

My name is Melissa Higgins, LCSW and I am the founder and owner of the Center for Therapy & Counseling Services, LLC.

I am committed to the power of relationships to heal. My goal is to help people develop relationships with themselves and others which may bring more meaning into their lives. I believe it is important to listen to the stories my clients have to tell and collaboratively help them develop more adaptive stories.

I love being a psychotherapist. I love the ability to help people re-story their lives and develop intra- and inter-personal coping skills and bolster their resilience and build upon their strengths. I believe in the importance of establishing a culturally and gender-sensitive therapeutic alliance.

No client leaves my office without my helping them to find some signs of strength and resilience. I work with a client and try to find out how things are right now in their life and how they would like them to be.

After practicing for 30 years, I still have a strong desire to help my clients. I have a commitment to integrate empirically-sound treatment approaches with a clinically sensitive compassionate approach.

We’ve all been stuck in a rut before. Sometimes we don’t even know how we ended up there. What we do know is that we find ourselves consistently frustrated with the same problems or the same people, having the same unproductive conversation or argument over and over again. It’s stressful and exhausting and sometimes it makes us want to give up.

If you are longing to feel like "yourself" again, I can help you create space for shifts in the patterns that make you feel stuck. Most of the time, these patterns started off serving an important and positive purpose, but have likely outlasted their initial use.

I primarily utilize Cognitive Behavioral and Family Systems Therapy in working with clients. I have a Master's degree in Social Work from Wurzweiler School of Social Work, Yeshiva University, and a bachelor's degree from the University of Massachusetts, at Amherst.

I believe relationships are a mirror by which we come to understand and see ourselves more clearly. My hope is to create a healthy relationship with clients, with respect for boundaries and uncomfortable emotions, which can be used as a model and guide for other relationships in their lives.

Brave people tend to seek therapy because they share their stories with a therapist they don't know and sometimes about sensitive topics. Clients tell me that I am easy to talk to, understanding, warm and have a good sense of humor. I most closely identify with the Rational Emotive Therapy approach, where the combination of accepting and feeling our emotions, with reviewing and perhaps revising our thinking leads to better results in life.

I listen very closely to my clients to hear and intuit both the unprocessed pain and the counterproductive thoughts that get in their way. Then I work to find a way to help the clients see alternatives. I believe that all primary emotions have value if handled properly, including ones often labeled as negative (such as anger and sadness), but that some thoughts can be unhelpful and destructive. I have a lot of experience with the roots of self-sabotaging behavior and how to end that pattern. My clients have often told me that they appreciate how I engage actively with them to help them find a path that is right for them.

I work with children, teens, adults and seniors who want to actively learn to have their life function better, including those who have addictive behaviors or have attempted suicide. I work with couples and focus on how changes in communication and thinking can change feelings. I work with persons who have criminal records or who are on parole or probation. On the other hand, clients in the business world have told me that my past experiences and insights as an officer and director in both large corporations and startups have been very helpful to them.

Together we can find a way for you to meet life struggles with confidence and with a deeper understanding of yourself. I work with you to build the inner and outer resources you need to live a life that feels purposeful and with vitality.

I listen well. My intention is always to understand and grasp the whole story as it unfolds, realizing there is more to discover. Life is a series of transitions and compromises. Sometimes we get too busy or overwhelmed, maybe we simply get caught up in the race, and we lose touch with our Self. This can result in emotional (hopelessness, anxiety), cognitive (decreased concentration and focus) or physical symptoms (fatigue, restlessness). Keeping a life in balance does not have to be 'work', but it does require some basic maintenance. How willing are you to reflect on your goals? Make adjustments to your thinking and behavior? How ready are you to actually live the life you say you want to live?

If you have ever felt as if you have 'lost your path', you are not alone. These are normal thoughts and feelings. To suppress them as if they were wrong or shameful, however, gives them a power they do not deserve. Take your power back.

Felice Carpenter, MS, LAMFT

I work with people who are experiencing feelings of anxiety, depression, sadness and anger. They are in unfulfilling relationships or have difficulty making relationships. The situations they find themselves in can be of short or long duration. Whether from external sources or more internally driven, helping them express their feelings and connecting them to their source allows individuals to bring more objectivity to their perspective. From this vantage point comes the ability to create new approaches to viewing themselves and situations. When helpful, I give very concrete practical advice and from this comes change.

I take great effort in building a therapeutic relationship, utilizing a down to earth approach and good sense of humor.
