What Does Healthy Family Life Look Like in 2014?

There’s no way around it. Creating, caring for, and maintaining a healthy family life is a job. It takes effort, a clear set of goals and values, teamwork, and, sometimes, training hours. A little outside advice or friends and family outside of a marriage to vent to is commonplace, but how do you know when it’s time to clock some training hours? When is it time to seek marriage counseling?

The easy answer is whenever you’re considering it. Marriage counseling can’t hurt a marriage, and even a single consult with your partner and an objective party could shed light on issues that have been subliminally bugging either or both of you.

The long form answer is that there are several signs that it might be time to find a professional ear. One red flag is if communication has become negative or nonverbal to the point that you’re no longer resolving issues, just scratching at the surface for the point of scratching. Another is if either partner is considering an affair or has already had one. This may seem obvious, but so many marriages either dismiss thinking of an affair as normal until the urge is acted upon, or that once an affair has been started the marriage is unsalvageable.

When a spouse starts to feel more like a roommate than a loved one, considering a counselor is a good next step. If you’ve given up on intimacy or conversation and chalking it up to the spark being gone, marriage counseling is probably your next best step.

Finally, when you’re staying together for the sake of the children, it’s time to involve a third party. That mindset rarely benefits anyone in the household and a professional can help to give more options than you and your partner have yet considered.

If any of these points rang home, give Dina a call. She would be more than happy to consult with you and your partner and help you look at some more options.
