Betrayal trauma refers to the emotional and psychological harm caused when someone you trust deeply like a partner or family member betrays that trust. This can lead to feelings of confusion, loss of a sense of safety, loneliness, anxiety, and deep emotional pain. The psychological effects of betrayal trauma can be similar to PTSD: hyper-vigilance, anxiety, flashbacks, sleep and eating disturbances, emotional dysregulation, and a lack of trust in ones’ own intuition.
Healing from betrayal trauma involves rebuilding trust (both with oneself and others), processing the emotions, beliefs, and thoughts tied to the betrayal, and finding safe, trusted supports. In session we use evidence-based effective trauma therapy approaches, such as EMDR to help clients recover from the effects of a betrayal.
