About Josh Kates

With over twenty five years of experience working with adults, couples and adolescents who have anxiety disorders, depression, OCD or marital & relationship problems, my experience is broad-ranging. I have helped hundreds of people cope with their emotional challenges, complex relationship issues and resolve difficult work/life problems. I've also helped people with serious mental health problems and have provided support and guidance to those who simply want to achieve more. I am an NASW approved clinical supervisor, a certified Schema Therapist and certified Schema Therapy supervisor and trainer. I have trained in several Therapy Methods and I integrate my training, experience and intuitive style to work in a personal, warm and caring way to help individuals and couples overcome their challenges.

I am a graduate of New York University's School of Social Work where I earned my Master's in Clinical Social Work. My specialties include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Schema Therapy. I am a full member of the International Society of Schema Therapy (ISST), an Advanced Certified Schema Therapist and an approved ISST Schema Therapist Supervisor/Trainer having trained with Wendy Behary and Dr. Jeffrey Young, the founder of Schema Therapy.

Because one of my core beliefs and passions is that a strong, primary intimate relationship is key to a happy life, I hosted a radio talk show called Marriage Matters exploring topics related to marriage, relationships and intimacy and interviewed authors, experts and clinicians on many aspects of relationships. As an early user of technology for psychotherapy, I’m among the pioneers of online counseling. Because of my early online success with my Marriage Matters website and talk radio show, I was the subject of news stories on CNN ( another CNN article ) and other national publications regarding Internet Counseling and family issues.  My articles on family issues and communication have been published in Parent's Guide Magazine, numerous websites and blogs. A few are available here on my website.

My approach to psychotherapy is to develop an extremely personalized conceptualization for each client or couple. I will work with you in a compassionate and supportive way and will make your therapy a practical and meaningful experience. I provide supportive feedback and can help address far deeper personality or behavioral challenges as your needs dictate. My objective is to help you identify your goals, engage you in the work of your therapy, build on your strengths and ultimately guide you to attain your goals. I look forward to hearing from you.
