Therapy Methods

Cognitive Behavior Therapy:
Cognitive Behavior Therapy is a short-term method of psychotherapy which can be applied to all behavioral, emotional and interpersonal problems. The emphasis is on how people interpret events and how people can be helped by challenging their interpretations. Together, you will learn the core skills of CBT and how to apply them to your life. CBT treatment has grown tremendously since it evolved. There are now applications for anxiety, depression, marriage counseling, and there are literally hundreds of studies proving its effectiveness.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy:
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) was developed by Marsha Linehan, Ph.D. It is a type of psychotherapy that combines behavioral science with concepts originating as far back as eastern religions like Buddhism. DBT is a recognized systematic tretment method with core skills aimed at increasng one's awareness and abilities to identify and manage pervasive patterns of maladaptive personality and behaviors. The success achieved and the positive feedback I receive from clients who engage in DBT is significant.

Schema Therapy:
Schema Therapy was developed by Dr. Jeffrey E. Young with whom I have trained. Schema Therapy is deeper therapeutic work that was developed for use in the treatment of personality disorders, chronic depression, anxiety or when patients have failed to respond to other therapy techniques. Schema Therapy is a method of treatment combining theory and techniques from existing therapies including CBT, DBT, Psychoanalytic Object Relations, Attachment Theory and Gestalt Therapy. I am a Advanced Certified Schema Therapist, Trainer and Supervisor and a full member of the International Society of Schema Therapy. Click here to download a Client's Guide to Schema Therapy.

Marriage/Couples Counseling Techniques/Modlities:
There are many approaches to couples work. Among them are Emotionally Focused Therapy, Imago Therapy, The Gottman Method and more. All these and others are useful to produce change and improvement depending on the individuals, the specific issues and the clinician's abilities. Personally, I've found there is no "one size fits all" method for couples work. Each couple comes to counseling with not only their specific relationship problems, but each partner brings their own life experiences and patterns and sometimes more serious mental health problems. Each partner's individual issues almost always affect the problems in their relationship. Working through individual issues together, safely with a skilled therapist, builds stronger connections in a relationship. Understanding family dynamics, learning new coping and problem resolution skills as well as developing better communcation techniques are all part of couples work and can improve relationships. Again, and especially for problems like affairs, tragedy, trauma, losses, blended family issues or other complex matters, I don't believe any one model can fix it all. That's why I use skills from several of the methods I've described above. Feel free to call me to arrange an initial session to evaluate your relationship needs. Contact me Here .
